Mount Saint Vincent University was founded as an Academy by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in the year 1873 to train novices and young sisters as teachers. The school partnered with Dalhousie University in the year 1914, enabling it to offer first-two years of college degree preparation at its campus which could be transferred towards completion of programme at Dalhousie campus. In the year 1925, Mount Saint Vincent University received charter from the Nova Scotia legislature to grants its own degrees as Mount Saint Vincent College, which made it the only independent women’s college in the British Commonwealth. The school received a new charter in 1964 and it was eventually renamed to Mount Saint Vincent University.

Today, Mount Saint Vincent University enrolls a diverse mix of over 4,000 young men and women from across Canada and more than 50 countries around the globe.
